The CrossFit Open 2020

The CrossFit Games season kicks off on the 10th of October 2019, the 20.1 Open workout announcement will officially kick off the 2020 season. Although it may be the second Open for the year, we are excited to see what the next 5 weeks of fitness testing will bring? But another Open in the same year? It has to do with changes to the games season but all you need to know is it is another opportunity to come together as a community, test our fitness and have some fun!

Why You should enter the Open for the second time this year?

The start to the CrossFit Games season once again kicks off with the Open. Unlike years past the Open will now take place in October, which means in 2019 there will be two Opens. So why should you do both? AT CFJ we strongly believe the Open makes us fitter, regardless of our competitive goals. So one more Open means one more opportunity that you get to be fitter. Over the past 9 years, we have also experienced more PB’s and firsts in the 5 weeks of the Open than any other period in the gym. So its a no brainer sign up and get fitter!

Changes to programming

The Open is a huge community event, not only for us at CFJ but all Boxes across the world. A period where members become a little more serious about their recovery, nutrition and sleep. Ensuring they are perfectly primed for the Open workout to come that week. So we will be providing some additional priming to make sure you are Open ready on Friday Night Lights (FNL). This will mean some changes to the programming over the next 5 weeks, see the below to take full advantage.

Weekly programme flow

Thursday – An optional “pregame” session will be posted each week on Thursday. Think of it as an active recovery day; the goal is to leave the gym feeling better than when we came in. We want to get the body moving, break a little sweat, mobilize, and then—shut it down. This will also be a perfect opportunity to refine those more difficult skills with the “GOAT DAY”. We will be changing 06:00 am endurance over to CrossFit for the course of the Open. We will still have an endurance class at 17:30, so join that class if working on your endurance.

What is “GOAT DAY”? “Goat” is CrossFit slang for a movement that challenges us. Examples: Double-Unders, Pull-ups, Overhead Squats, Handstand Push-ups. These are the best days to turn perceived weaknesses into strengths. We don’t improve our technique with a high heart rate – that’s what we refer to as “training”. Thursday’s are geared towards “practise,” dialling in our mechanics with a controlled heart rate. When we couple “training” with “practise” throughout the week in the right doses, we set ourselves on the fast track to results. Choose two “Goats” to work on, and we’ll alternate between them on each minute. Choose an appropriate rep scheme for each movement that keeps things in the practice intensity range.

Friday – The Open workout will be performed in classes on Friday morning. The main event “Friday Night Lights” will take place from 16:00 onwards. The community will come together, throw down, cheer each other on and have a great time.

Saturday – GI Jozi and Olympic lifting will still take place with no changes. The Open prep class will now be our skills refinement day, followed by some lower-impact fitness. There will be a lighter metcon programmed after, designed to preserve capacity without breaking the body down.

Monday – Will be an opportunity for you to re-test the workout. If you do not want to go through that pain again? We understand and will have a metcon that is programmed with the same time domain.

Fun things to do during the Open

The CrossFit Games have been around for a long time and continue to get better each year. The Open is no different with CrossFit coming up with more and more ways for the community to enjoy the open. last year they introduced the hashtag which allows you to rank yourself against other athletes using hashtag unique to you. So all the #moms in the world can see how they can rank up against one another. CrossFit has also introduced a custom leaderboard, allowing you to create leaderboards unique to your experiences. For example, SmoothBrew will be setting up a leaderboard to rank all her customer against each other. So jump onto the games site https://open.crossfit.com/ get signed up and start having fun.

If you are not competing in the open this year, do not worry. There will also be programming put in so that you can continue to improve your fitness during the Open. We just cannot promise that you will have as much fun while doing it!
