FRIDAY MEMBER PROFILE: JARED BROWN

WHAT DROVE YOU TO JOIN CROSSFIT JOZI ?

In 2015 I moved (back) to Jhb for work; CFJ was the closest reputable box for me and so joining was a no-brainer.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MEMBER FOR?

I’ve been a member since July 2015.

WHO INSPIRES YOU?

(At CFJ) I’m inspired by the coaches who are fully committed and never miss a beat, also every single member that shows up on the regular, ready to tackle the day’s WOD and win at life. In addition, I’m inspired by the dawn patrol – I wrestle with my alarm clock on a daily basis so I can only commend those committed few who get more done by 7am than most do all day.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING WHEN YOU AREN’T AT THE GYM?

Outside of work and other business interests I enjoy spending my free time with family and friends and I’m always seeking some kind of adventure to keep life interesting.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE CHILDHOOD T.V PROGRAMME?

I got most excited for Biker Mice from Mars but funnily enough, I wasn’t that big on television growing up. I much preferred messing around outside, causing mischief, kicking a ball around or playing some kind of sport. From about the age of 8 most afternoons were spent taking part in some kind of extra mural sporting activity.

IF YOU HAD TO HAVE A SUPERPOWER WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

I’d probably choose flight or teleportation… There are so many amazing places in the world that I’d love to experience.

WHAT WOULD YOUR PERFECT WORKOUT BE?

I’m an addict for the endorphin rush from any hectic workout so I’m not too fussed when it comes to the specifics; although when the dreaded “HS” comes up I get a little anxious because I know I’m going to be spending a lot of my workout time doing something that resembles an upside down macarena, instead of actually working out. I should probably spend more time sorting out my shoulder niggles or alternatively still be scaling my HS variations…

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE CLASS OR SESSION AT CFJ?

My most memorable session was probably finishing “Diane” in the 12 minute time cap (for the above reasons) and also landing my first bodyweight snatch at Oly class back in April.

WHAT MIGHT WE FIND IN YOUR FRIDGE AT HOME?

Nothing too exciting or out of the ordinary in my fridge… I’m all about balance and I enjoy eating clean so the fridge is mostly filled with fruit and veg and imported coffee beans.
If you had asked about the pantry cupboard things might’ve sounded a little more interesting…

WHAT IS THE COOLEST THING THAT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED AT CFJ?

The coolest thing I’ve achieved at CFJ was completing the 2016 open workouts. I’ve been doing CrossFit on and off since 2012 and this was the first time I was able to finish all 5 weeks of open workouts.

WHAT CHANGES IN YOUR HEALTH HAVE YOU NOTICED SINCE STARTING AT CFJ?

I’m a lot more consistent in my training since joining CFJ due to the way the programming is structured and I’ve noticed that the emphasis (from the coaches) on form and function before every class has changed the way I exercise and that has translated through to every aspect of my life. Aside from the expected benefits, I’m more conscious about the way I move, I have a better understanding of human movement and I generally feel much more capable to tackle all those adventures I’m constantly seeking.

LIST SOME OF YOUR BIG GOALS.

I want to ace those HS variations, improve on my gymnastics overall and get my Oly’ lifting up; specifically a triple digit snatch. I want a >2x BW squat and a +200kg deadlift before I enter the dirty-30’s.
