After a year or two of little to no exercise I decided that I wanted to live a more active lifestyle. My older brother Marinus Yates was training at the facility and recommended that I join CrossFit Jozi East. Looking back, it was definitely one of the best decisions I have made. I wish I had started earlier.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MEMBER FOR?
I have been a member at CrossFit Jozi East for roughly a year and a half.

WHO INSPIRES YOU AT THE GYM AND IN LIFE?
I would have to say that the CrossFit community inspires me, from the fittest guy “cough cough Johan” to all the dedicated people who are in the gym every week to improve their fitness. Watching the difference CrossFit has made in so many people’s lives and in my life is what keeps me inspired and coming back for more.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING WHEN YOU AREN’T AT THE GYM?
When I am not at CrossFit I am mostly at Varsity, Studying, thinking about CrossFit or out and about with friends and family.

WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU ALWAYS KEEP STOCK OF IN YOUR FRIDGE?
Noting specific really. But I do always have eggs and peanut butter stocked up at home.

TELL US ONE INTERESTING THING THAT PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I am a full time Building student at the University of Johannesburg and working toward becoming a professional Quantity Surveyor.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE INTERESTED IN STARTING CrossFit?
Do not waste any time, just do it. CrossFit is for anybody and everybody who wants to become the best version of themselves. You will be amazed at the difference it will make in your life.

WHAT MOVEMENTS WOULD YOUR PERFECT WORKOUT INCLUDE?
After thinking about this question the perfect work out is not one that I would find easy or be good at. The perfect workout would test my weaknesses and give me an opportunity to improve on my weaknesses so my perfect workout would have to include the olympic weightlifting movement – the snatch.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE CLASS AT CFJ EAST?
I will never forget my first time doing the Baseline. I pushed myself so hard that my brother had to drive me home, my fitness has improved significantly since then I now drive myself home after classes.

WHAT IS THE COOLEST THING THAT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED AT CFJ EAST?
The coolest thing I have achieved at CFJ East is a snatch, at the beginning of the year I could not even do a snatch with a pvc pipe I have definitely made a lot of progress since then.

WHAT CHANGES IN YOUR HEALTH HAVE YOU NOTICED SINCE STARTING?
I am stronger physically and mentally, fitter and I have noticed a difference in my appearance.

LIST SOME OF YOUR BIG GOALS.

– Become a Quantity Surveyor once I have completed my studies.
– Train consistently for the rest of my life and become the best athlete that I can become.
– Travel the world.
