MEMBER PROFILE – RAQUEL SOFIA FERREIRA

What drove you to join CrossFit Jozi East?
I am not the fittest person in the world but I’ve always enjoyed being active and the idea of joining a gym just seemed… boring. I had a conversation with a colleague and heard about CrossFit, so I decided to give it a try.

Instead of a maze of exercise machines and dumbbell racks and people taking selfies at a gym, I found that a smaller array of barbells, bumper plates, lifting platforms, climbing ropes, rings, medicine balls, kettlebells, and a whole lot of pull-up bars just seemed a lot more exciting. The fantastic part about CrossFit is that the workouts are fun and different each day!

I love the fact that we also get more personal training and a freedom to lift how you want. In a CrossFit box, you don’t have to worry about dropping your heavy deadlift, getting yelled at for grunting, or being kicked out for being too awesome.

Unlike a traditional gym atmosphere, where you are usually by yourself during the majority of your workout, in a CrossFit gym… you will be training along side a group of your peers, who are doing the workout WITH you, as a team! Those same people, your teammates, help make the workouts FUN, and will encourage you all the way until the end, until you complete your last rep.

You will NOT find a more accepting and encouraging atmosphere, than that of a CF gym, anywhere else! When you get all these attributes in every class, each day that you come to workout at a CrossFit gym, you will not only improve your fitness, but you will ENJOY the process as well…..where else do you get that?

I also love the idea of pushing your limits but learning to respect those limits. You probably won’t become the strongest person on the planet with CrossFit, but you will become stronger, faster, and able to do more work across various disciplines.

I inspire myself. If its important to you , you will find a way. If not, you will find an excuse.

If you had to have a super power what would it be and why?
My super power would be Flight

Anything to do with legs

What has been your most memorable class or session at CFJ East?
Women’s Day Class – 9th August

What might we find in your fridge at home?
You will always find Cheese

What Is The Coolest Thing That You Have Achieved At CFJ East?
Bench Pressing 35kg’s – not a big number but definitely an achievement

What Changes In Your Health Have You Noticed Since Starting?
Heart Rate has definitely improved (the chest no longer burns). The again, I’ve only been back at CF for 4 months

List Some Of Your Big Goals.
Weight loss (A woman is never happy with her weight)
Pull-ups
More Cardio (not a huge fan). Perhaps running 5km’s within 30mins
50kg front squat and back squat
